How to Download Videos on iPhone

iOS handles downloads differently from Android; there's no visible Downloads folder in the Files app the same way, and Safari's download behavior has changed across iOS versions. Here's what actually happens.

Use Safari, not another browser

On iOS, only Safari has full access to the system download manager. Chrome and other browsers on iPhone are required by Apple to use Safari's underlying engine, but some third-party browsers handle downloads inconsistently. If a download doesn't seem to start, try the same link in Safari before assuming the tool is broken.

Where the file goes

When you tap Download in Safari, iOS shows a small download indicator in the address bar. Once finished, the file is saved to the Files app, under On My iPhone → Downloads (or iCloud Drive → Downloads, if that's your default save location: check in Settings → Safari → Downloads).

Getting a video into your camera roll

Downloaded videos land in Files, not Photos, so they won't automatically appear in your camera roll. Open Files, find the video, tap the share icon, and choose Save Video to add it to Photos.

If nothing happens when you tap Download

This is almost always a Safari download-location setting, not the downloader itself. Check Settings → Safari → Downloads and make sure it's set to ask or to save to a location you can find, rather than a location that's been changed to something unexpected.

Using the downloader on iPhone

1. Copy the video link from the Share menu in the platform's app.
2. Open the downloader in Safari and paste the link.
3. Choose a format once it's found, and tap Download.
4. Check the Files app if you don't see a save prompt right away.
